- What you should know about the U. S. Robotics 28,800 Data/Fax
- Modem Internal Version labeled plug and play and now with 33.6
- Kbps data.
-
- 1.) U. S. Robotics, herein known as USR, knowing and willingly
- shipped this modem labeled as plug and play for Windows 95,
- without the software tag to update the windows driver database
- so Windows 95 would do the correct installation without any
- user intervention.
-
- 2.) There is still no reference in the mdmusrsp.inf file to
- (1.0USR0011\\Modem\TIA578,TIA592\Sportster 33.6 FAX INT)FF
- or UNIMODEM7A1BB094, which my particular Sportster identifies
- itself to Windows 95. USR technical support and postings keep
- pointing to a mdmusrsp.inf file that merely contains the
- higher than 28,800 speed responses and does not address the
- erroneous entry in /my computer/control panel/system/system
- properties/device manager/modem/Sporster 33.6 FAX Int.
- Windows does not correctly auto identify this modem, even
- though it is labeled as plug and play. Therefore, it cannot
- be a plug and play device. Here in Texas, that falls under
- the Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
-
- 3.) Even though I purchased this modem on 03/04/96 diagnostics
- reveal a EPROM date of 10/13/95 Rev 1.1. It is my
- understanding that there was a subsequent revision on
- 10/18/95 -- 1.1 and 12/1/95 -- 2.0. Did I buy a beta version
- of this modem? Why will USR not give us a full accounting of
- the chip set problems they are having and when fixes might be
- generally available? Why does USR not state on the box, that
- at present, this 33.6 mode is only available between two USR
- modems?
-
- 4.) Why can I not get a quick and reliable negotiation and
- connection to another on line service using the same modem
- (external model)? Why will USR not work with me to fix
- this?
-
- 5.) Why has USR erected barriers and totally insulated its
- self from support and feedback from its users?
